Since living in Louisville, I have met a former Miss America and am now distantly related by marriage to a former Miss Tennessee.
Oddly, I went all of my life without meeting any former Miss Anythings until I moved here.
If you doubt that Kentucky is the South, that should end it.

I met a runner up to Miss Ohio at one of Lauren's Halloween parties.
When I was a kid living in St. Louis the city got to host the Miss Universe pageant. Every year in early July there's a big festival on the riverfront under the Arch. We went and all the contestants were there. Somehow I accidentally bumped into Miss Ireland somewhere near the Arch. She patted me on the head and said kind words. I don't remember if she spoke w/ harsh R's or not. A few nites later, I was rivetted to the TV screen as Miss Ireland won 2nd Runner Up spot. This was my first brush with celebrity... so I thought. This woman is now probably near 50 and is a bank manager or real estate agent in County Kilkenny. RYAN.
